Mtendere cares for and supports 140 orphaned children who live with extended, or other families, within the communities of two villages in Ulongwe.

The care of orphans at Mtendere is the 'dream' of its founder, Danger Chipino. He has set up a committee of 10 villagers who work hand in hand with the traditional leaders of the community. This ensures that all are involved in decision making and care of the children and gives support to the women volunteers who help with the daily cooking and feeding.

The 75 pre-school children come to the centre for 2 hours each morning for their meal and some simple lessons. The 65 older children go to school, but also receive one meal a day. Mtendere try to help with school uniforms and fees.

The centre was built in 2007, on land donated by a villager and was funded as a 'one-off project' through a charitable trust in Harrogate, in the UK.

Most of the children have become orphaned  because of various health problems such as Malaria, TB, Cancer and HIV Aids which have afflicted their parents.

Mtendere needs help, not only to be able to maintain the present feeding programme but also to extend the centre in order to accommodate the growing numbers of younger children for longer periods each day; and to build a 'volunteer house' in the hope that outside volunteers might come and stay.
